Why Become an Adopter?
By joining as a Founding Adopter, your organization can:
- Enhance credibility and transparency of the reports you write, read, or review.
- Signal leadership in adopting industry-wide reporting norms.
- Shape the evolution of the Reporting Norms.
- Connect with peers in the Adopter community to share insights and learnings.
Since their launch in April 2024, the Reporting Norms have gained momentum with 150+ pilot participants. Founding Adopters help transform this momentum into industry-wide impact.
Who Can Adopt?
Organizations can adopt the Reporting Norms in different roles:
- Report Preparers, such as asset managers, commit to following the Reporting Norms when preparing their impact reports on a “include or explain” basis. This means including a short table in your next impact report or equivalent document to show where the recommended content in the Reporting Norms can be found, or to provide explanations where it is not included.
- Report Users, such as asset owners, commit to following the Reporting Norms by a) encouraging the managers and funds they invest in to use the Reporting Norms, and/or b) using the Reporting Norms as the basis for their review of managers’ impact reports and subsequent conversations with managers about their impact performance.
- Service Providers, such as independent reviewers, consultants and reporting platforms commit to integrating the Reporting Norms in their offers, such as methodologies for independent review, report preparation, training and platform services.

FAQ
Are there any fees involved?
No. Becoming an Adopter is free and voluntary.
Is independent verification required?
No verification process is required to become an Adopter. Individual report preparers and/or users may seek verification and assurance of impact report, but this is entirely at their discretion.
Do impact reports need to be public?
No! Whether reports are shared privately or publicly is up to the Adopter. Impact Frontiers does not publish a database of impact reports.
Are Adopters writing impact reports expected to include everything suggested in the Reporting Norms?
Preparers are expected to follow the Reporting Norms on a “comply or explain” basis. But this does not mean having to include all the content recommended in the Reporting Norms. Simply explain where content has not been included (e.g. because it is not applicable, or not yet feasible to include, or not relevant) in the Reporting Norms Index or in footnotes in the report. We recognize that the Reporting Norms are intentionally aspirational — designed to support a long-term journey toward better impact reporting, evolving over multiple reporting cycles.
Do I need to send Impact Frontiers our impact report?
While we would be grateful to see impact reports preparers by Founding Adopters, this is not an obligation. Any reports shared with us – e.g. for ‘office hours’ feedback – not already in the public domain will remain confidential and will not be shared further.
When is the ‘cut off' for becoming a Founding Adopter?
31st October 2026 is the current deadline for organizations to commit to becoming Founding Adopters.
What if the recommended content in the Reporting Norms is not relevant to our asset class?
Version 1 of the Reporting Norms is designed for private markets, but Adopters from all other asset classes are welcome. Preparers should simply indicate in the Index table where v1.0 does not apply. We are beginning to consult on adaptations to the Reporting Norms to cover listed equities, and on specific considerations for investor types (such as development finance institutions, foundations and fund-of-funds) and expect to release an exposure draft of V2 in mid-2026.
How can Report Users encourage the managers they invest in to use the Reporting Norms?
This is a non-exhaustive list of actions that asset owners and allocators may take:
- Incorporate the Reporting Norms into the Due diligence process. This could, for example: a) assess a manager’s previous impact reports against the Reporting Norms; and/or, b) ask whether the manager is, or plans to become a Reporting Norms Adopter during due diligence questions. The What to Report section of the website, the Assessment Worksheet, and/or Index table can be used as reference.
- Incorporate the Reporting Norms into expectations for manager reporting. This could, for example: a) mention the Reporting Norms in investment agreements and/or side letters; b) suggest managers review and follow the Reporting Norms, either through bilateral feedback to GPs or more formally in LPACs.
How can Report Users leverage the Reporting Norms in conversations with managers about their impact performance?
The Reporting Norms can be used to understand and to critically question the quality and credibility of manager reporting practices. They can also be used to provide feedback to individual managers on their reporting – especially focusing on strong or weak practices.
This is a non-exhaustive set of questions that asset owners could ask managers about their impact reports:
- How are the voices and experiences of people affected by your investments reflected in the report, and how does their feedback inform your decisions? (2.2 ‘Identification of Stakeholders’)
- What have been the key lessons from this reporting cycle, and how are they influencing your investment strategy, engagement moving forward? (3.1 ‘Management Commentary’)
- How does the impact report explain your fund’s specific contribution to the results achieved — beyond the efforts of investees themselves or broader market trends? (3.2 ‘Impact Performance’)
- What steps do you take to ensure the quality, reliability, and transparency of the impact data presented — including methodologies, data sources, and limitations? (3.2 ’Impact Performance’)
- What aren’t you putting in the report – are there any material exclusions or data gaps? (3.2 ’Impact Performance’)
- What didn’t go well this year – tell me about any negative or unintended impacts, and what you did about them? (3.3 Negative Impacts)
- What internal or external processes are in place to review, validate, or assure the accuracy and integrity of the reported impact data? (4 ‘Governance’)
- Why did you choose that particular case study to highlight in the report? (5 ‘Case Studies’)
As a Service Provider, do my clients automatically become Adopters?
Becoming an Adopter as a Service Provider does not automatically extend Adopter status to your clients. Your client would have to formally sign up as an Adopter before they can display the Adopter logo on their reports.
Can organizations become Founding Adopters if they haven’t yet published an impact report?
Yes. Organizations are welcome to become and announce they are Adopters before publishing their first impact report that will follow the Reporting Norms.
Can my organization become a Founding Adopter if we commit to following the Reporting Norms only on our annual reports and not quarterly reports?
Absolutely: The Reporting Norms are mainly designed for annual reporting. It is up to you if you wish to use the Reporting Norms to also inform quarterly reporting.
